In addition to leading research institutions, Greensboro and the surrounding Piedmont Triad region is nurtured by several private colleges which provide a steady stream of excellent performances, speakers, community leaders, and well-prepared graduates that permeate our community with creativity and social awareness.
Guilford College
- As the third oldest co-educational higher education institution in the nation
- Approximately 2,800 traditional-aged and adult students including 1,100 in residence.
- 40 majors including unique programs in forensic biology, environmental studies and peace and conflict studies.
- Each summer for nearly 50 years, Guilford has hosted the Eastern Music Festival and School (EMF), featuring well-known classical musicians as faculty members and performers.
Greensboro College
- Undergraduate liberal arts college, founded in 1838.
- Approximately 1,250 students enrolled primarily from 30 different states and 21 countries.
- More than 30 majors and 1,000 different courses as well as four Masters degrees in Elementary Education, Behavior and Emotional Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Bennett College
- Bennett College was founded in 1873 as a school for African-American men and women and in 1926, Bennett College became a college for African-American women.
- Over 780 currently enrolled
- 16 areas of study in Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, Natural and Behavioral Sciences and Mathematics.
Elon University
- Located just east of Greensboro, Elon University is a private comprehensive university with more than 5,600 students.
- Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the nation’s number one “school to watch” and was featured as the nation’s “leader in engaged learning” by Newsweek-Kaplan.
- 50 undergraduate majors and graduate degrees in law, business, physical therapy, education and interactive media
- Elon University School of Law is located in downtown Greensboro
High Point University
- Approximately 3,700 undergraduate and graduate students at their campus in High Point, NC
- 68 undergraduate majors and seven masters degrees including Chemistry-Business, Entrepreneurship, Global Trade, Home Furnishings and Management Information Systems.
- It was recently ranked Fifth among all Baccalaureate Colleges in the South by US News and World Report
Salem College
- Located in Winston-Salem, Salem College is the oldest educational institution for women in the US.
- 1,100 students enrolled, including traditional undergraduate female students as well as men and women enrolled in graduate-degree programs and courses

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts
- Part of the University of North Carolina system, The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in Winston-Salem, NC trains high school, college, and graduate students in dance, drama, film, music, visual arts, and design as well as production in a professional conservatory environment.
- Students, faculty, and guest artists - present over 300 performances and screenings every year.
