Research Universities

Greensboro and the larger Piedmont Triad region have a wealth of higher education options for all levels of study, but scholarship isn’t the only thing being nurtured here.  Research and development are driving technology transfer and strong industry connections with our universities.

North Carolina A&T State University

  • Ranked third in the University of North Carolina system for research funding
  • Rated as a High Research Activity University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
  • 10,000 students, offers 117 undergraduate degrees, 58 masters degrees and 5 Ph.D programs
  • Strong history in agriculture & engineering - translating into cutting -edge research areas like:

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

  • More than 17,500 on-campus students and over 950 others in distance-learning programs.
  • Recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for its High Research Activity and Community Engagement, UNCG’s major research areas include:
    • Child learning and development
    • Health disparities
    • Drug design and nanobiotechnology through the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.

Wake Forest University

  • Ranked 28th among Best Colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2009
  • Close to 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students
  • Offers a school of law, school of medicine, a divinity school, and advanced degrees in business management. 
  • Home to the Institute for Regenerative Medicine - the first group of scientists in the world to successfully implant a laboratory-grown organ into humans. 
  • As the lead institution in the expansion of the Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP), Wake Forest University Health Sciences is actively commercializing research in this 240-acre mixed-use urban research park.

Winston-Salem State University    

  • Offers quality baccalaureate and graduate level programs
  • Graduate programs include 10 master’s degrees in fields such as physical therapy, healthcare administration, and business administration
  • Research centers and facilities include a new Human Performance and Biodynamics Laboratory, a collaboration between WSSU’s School of Health Sciences and Wake Forest University School of Medicine; a $13 million Computer Science Center with dedicated graduate student lab space; and the Center of Excellence for the Elimination of Health Disparities
