Advanced Manufacturing & Materials Education & Workforce

Greensboro’s young and well-educated workforce provides high-quality output at a reduced operational cost. More than 22,000 Guilford County workers are employed in advanced manufacturing and almost 49,000 people in the Piedmont Triad Region work in advanced manufacturing occupations.

Greensboro is investing heavily in new areas such as the science of nanotechnology and composite materials research.  Our colleges and universities are ready to provide research support, sophisticated engineering programs and training for a superior workforce ready to excel in advanced materials and manufacturing.

The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University are establishing a joint nanoscience and nanoengineering school at the Gateway University Research Park in Greensboro.  Both a professional science master’s degree with a chemical or biological focus and a doctorate in nanoscience and nanoengineering will be offered.

North Carolina A&T State University

Centers of excellence at NC A&T can be a tremendous asset to area companies.  For example, NC A&T’s Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures conducts research on advanced ceramic materials and their composites and the Center for Composite Material Research focuses on polymer-based composite materials.

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC)

Helping companies achieve a world-class workforce is the goal of GTCC, which is one of the most well-respected community colleges in North Carolina.  Customized workforce training offered by GTCC is as diverse as the manufacturers served.  Companies may be eligible for generous grants through the New and Expanding Industry Training (NEIT) or the Focused Industrial Training (FIT) programs, ready to meet a manufacturer’s specific job training needs.
