Greensboro Economic Development Alliance Announces 2008 Results
and Forward Greensboro II Five-Year Results

January 26, 2009(Greensboro, NC) Greensboro Economic Development Alliance (GEDA) announced today that the organization had leveraged the creation of 1,558 new jobs and $194 million in capital investment in 2008 despite a turbulent global economy.  O’Reilly Automotive, Menlo/Diebold, Mack Trucks, Inc., FedEx Ground, and Precor all chose Greensboro and Guilford County for new facilities this year, while Bonset, Canplast, and Cessna, with existing local facilities all chose to expand.  From 2003 to 2008, GEDA announced the creation of 6,300 new jobs and over $819 million in new capital investment.  These achievements exceeded all five-year goals.

“2008 was our best year to date,” commented GEDA chairman, Chuck Cornelio.  “Very well-known companies like Mack Trucks and FedEx Ground chose Guilford County for new facilities this year – our community is continuing to attract international attention with these high-caliber announcements.”

“Although we are in extremely challenging times, Greensboro has amazing momentum - from capitalizing on our colleges and universities, our existing companies, and our truly outstanding quality of life,” commented GEDA President Dan Lynch.  “It is that momentum coupled with well-known companies choosing Greensboro over the last several years that helps us remain forward-looking and very positive in the middle of the current economic slowdown.”

GEDA has had an industry cluster focused strategy for economic development over the last three years.  This strategy has helped to leverage community assets to market Greensboro more effectively with evident success.

A member of the Greensboro Partnership, Greensboro Economic Development Alliance’s mission is to facilitate the creation of high quality jobs, attract new capital investment, retain and expand existing businesses, improve per capita income and generally improve the quality of life in Greensboro and Guilford County.
