Foreign Trade Zone

Foreign Trade Zone 230 is a multi-site General Purpose Zone located in Guilford County. The Piedmont Triad Partnership is the Grantee of the Zone, and markets it to businesses that can utilize it to create jobs and increase economic activity in the zone.

Benefits of Foreign Trade Zones

Duty Deferral: Customs duties are paid only when imported merchandise is shipped into US Customs territory.

Exports: Customs duties are not paid on merchandise exported from the zone.

Defects, Damage, Waste: Duties are reduced or eliminated on merchandise lost to defect, damage, obsolescence, waste and scrap.

International Returns: Merchandise exported and subsequently returned to the FTZ is not subject to Customs duties upon return.

Simplification of 
Import/Export Procedures: Delays in Customs clearances and duty drawback procedures are eliminated. Delivery times are reduced by direct shipments to the FTZ.

Country of Origin Marking: No country-of-origin markings are required on merchandise admitted to the FTZ, saving an up-front expense. If needed, labels can be applied in the FTZ.


Locations of FTZ 230

Piedmont Triad International Airport: Located in western Guilford County, the entire 2,800 acre airport property has been designated a foreign trade zone.

SubZone Status: Currently, some local manufacturers have subzone status, allowing them the benefits of the Zone, without physically locating in it.
