Transportation Infrastructure

Situated at the intersection of two interstates and several major highways, Greensboro is strategically located in the mid-Atlantic. Halfway between New York and Miami as well as Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Greensboro is an outstanding East Coast location for business.  More than half of the U.S. population and most major markets are within 650 miles.

Air Cargo & Air Service

  • The new FedEx Mid-Atlantic Air Hub is currently under construction and will open in 2009 at the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA).
  • The Piedmont Triad International Airport offers about 80 direct flights daily to most major U.S. cities. Its central location and state-of-the-art facilities make PTIA a catalyst for commercial and industrial development.
Highway Infrastructure
  • I-40, I-85 and future I-73/I-74 intersect in Greensboro and provide excellent connectivity.
  • Access to I-95 and major highways, including US 29, US 220, NC 68 and NC 421.
  • The Greensboro Urban Loop is under construction, with the southern portion complete, to provide greater access to interstates and the Piedmont Triad International Airport.  

Ports

  • The proximity of North Carolina’s deepwater ports in Wilmington and Morehead City, plus the Piedmont Triad Inland Terminal intermodal facility, link Greensboro business to the world.

Railroad

  • Many industrial sites and buildings are served by rail with excellent freight service provided by Norfolk Southern and CSX.

Trucking and Ground Shipping

  • The FedEx Mid-Atlantic Air Hub is complimented by FedEx Freight, FedEx Ground and other transportation, e-commerce and supply chain management services.
  • UPS operates a significant regional ground hub in Greensboro to offer worldwide express carrier and package delivery.
  • Major logistics operations in Greensboro include DSC Logistics, Epes Logistics Services, Inc., New Breed, Inc., Schenker Logistics, and Volvo Logistics North America.
  • Greensboro features one of the largest concentrations of trucking companies on the East Coast as well as excellent trailer availability.
